Australian officials have been asked to explain why the country’s foreign minister used a red-faced emoji to describe Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The question was asked of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) officials at the Senate estimates hearing by senator Penny Wong. She was making reference to an interview with BuzzFeed in February that was conducted with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop using her language of choice, emoji.


Bishop was asked to choose an emoji spirit animal for the former prime minister Tony Abbott, former communications minister Malcolm Turnbull and Russian President Vladimir Putin. She texted a running man, an iPhone emoji and then a red-faced man usually used to express anger. Read more…
